Manipulating Words

– I’m back from my trip. The deposition was rather uneventful. Not at all like my previous post.

-I had the opportunity to spend some time with some top notch lawyers from a quality law firm. The law firm is Young, Conaway in Wilmington. This was as impressive an assemblage of lawyers as I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Extremely thorough, smart and likeable. It’s tough to find a group where each person has an ample helping of all 3 of those traits.

-My blog was brought up in my deposition and a few of the pages were attached as exhibits.

-Depositions are interesting because they offer  a study in the area of language. It is so important to be precise in your language but, hard as you may try, others still may misinterpret or give different context to the words you use.

-It’s amazing that thousands of cases are litigated every year over differing interpretations of words.

-Speaking of the manipulation of words, here is a link to an article from the Wall Street Journal. This is an article about Austin Kleon. He is an artist. He uses black magic marker to create poems from articles in newsprint. He blacks out most of the text and leaves only some isolated words to convey an image or story. I love stuff like this.
