Monday Musings: Avoiding Entropy

-The Homily at my church yesterday was interesting. Our Priest talked about the second law of thermal dynamics. The basic premise was that nothing in this world stays in place. Everything trends towards chaos and disorder. This process is called “entropy.” It is the process of degradation. And we have to work every day to avoid this degradation, to keep our lives in order and to stay focused. The real challenge is to not just avoid entropy but to improve and thrive.

-I read obituaries. And this is a look at one from yesterday that was in the Fort Worth Star Telegram. It is great.

Debby Lynn Underwood Gross (1964 – 2010)

Debby Lynn Underwood Gross danced her way into heaven on Sunday, April 25, 2010.
Celebration of life: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at the home of David and Toni Lewis in Fort Worth. Forgo the bad organ music and somber routine. Let’s raise a glass, deliver our best jokes, tell some stories, stir it up and laugh. She expects old fashioned home cookin’ funeral food! If you try to sneak chain restaurant brown gravy or powdered potatoes into the party, we will hurt you. Also, please don’t ask us when you can pick up your covered dishes. We’re keeping them! Dates are encouraged as long as you are not too closely related. Two-drink minimum. Smoke ’em if ya got ’em.
Never miss the chance to dance.

-I would have liked Ms. Gross.

-This obituary reminds me of my Uncle Jack Clements. Before he died he left specific instructions about how we were to handle his “funeral”. We all went out to have drinks and dinner and he picked up the tab. Perfect. He was truly one of a kind.

– The BP oil rig explosion gives me pause. And if you have a “Drill, Baby, Drill” bumper sticker on the back of your car it should give you pause as well. I am appalled at the lack of fail safe devices they had to prevent or contain a disater such as this. This will cause untold devastation on the gulf coast. And what if  there are 2 or 3 more of these in the next 10 years? I promise you the terrorists view these platforms as “soft targets”.

-It will be interesting to find out the reason behind the Times Square bomb attempt. That guy will be behind bars within 24 hours.

-Another interesting week awaits. I love my job.
